Dabīrān Research Group

Dabīrān is a research group dedicated to the study of premodern Islamic manuscripts and textual traditions. We focus on developing innovative methods of philology, textual-criticism, and historical research in the age of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. Our projects have a disciplinary focus on the history of science and philosophy.

The digital tools and methods developed within the framework of Dabīrān facilitate various kinds of research, from the basic work of organizing, reading, and digitally transcribing manuscripts; to capturing historical and scientific data from manuscripts; to preparing scholarly editions, translations, and intellectual-historical research.

The project is named after Najm al-Dīn Dabīrān al-Kātibī al-Qazwīnī

(d. 675/1276), author of one of the most widely studied works on logic of the medieval period: al-Risāla al-Shamsiyya.
Our projects have received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and other
